Case Study: “Finding Confidence and Connection Through Digital Inclusion”

Mark, in his late 50s, was referred to our Belper Recovery Hub by a social prescriber following a long struggle with alcohol dependency, poor mental health, and increasing social isolation. He lived alone with no broadband connection, no access to a smartphone, and very limited experience using the internet. His support worker noted that Mark was missing key appointments and was unaware of available recovery and health resources due to being digitally excluded.

Through our digital inclusion project, we first provided Mark with access to a laptop and wifi, then offered 1-to-1 support at home to help him get comfortable using it. These sessions covered essentials such as accessing the NHS app, exploring resources like Try Dry and Drink Down, and joining local health and wellbeing webinars. Sessions were delivered at a pace suited to Mark’s needs, with reassurance and practical guidance at each step.

Over time, Mark began attending small group digital skills sessions at the Recovery Hub, where he developed new skills and, just as importantly, new friendships. He was introduced to our WhatsApp peer support group—something he had never used before—which allowed him to stay in touch between sessions and feel part of a community. He also took part in a workshop on online safety and we went through an introduction to sober communities using our guide which helped him build confidence in finding safe spaces for ongoing support.

Mark now regularly uses the laptop and the hub to access virtual recovery meetings, message peers, and keep up with his health appointments. He recently expressed an interest in helping others and has even supported a new participant in learning how to access their first Zoom meeting.

“I used to think all this online stuff was for other people, not someone like me. But now it’s part of my day—it keeps me connected and gives me something to look forward to” Mark shared.

This case demonstrates the deep, personal impact of ReConnect—not just in improving technical skills, but in reducing isolation, building confidence, and supporting long-term recovery through meaningful digital connection.
