Apply for a refurbished digital device
Digital Support Derbyshire and PCrefurb offer a service providing donated refurbished IT devices to members of the Digital Support Derbyshire Network and the people they support.
As members of the Digital Support Derbyshire Network, if you deliver digital support in Derbyshire (excluding Derby City) and your project is in need of refurbished devices, you can apply to PCrefurb to assess your device needs.
Devices can be provided to enable you to run your group, and you can apply for devices to give to eligible individuals that you know are in need of support.
As part of this offer there will be a limited number of laptops, tablets, all-in-one desktops and small desktops, all of which are subject to availability. Applications for groups and individuals will be assessed, processed, and prepared on a case-by-case basis.
If your project or the individuals you support don’t have a broadband connection, please let us know as there will also be limited access to Wi-Fi Hotspots and data SIMs.
Success Stories
The RAY (Rother Active Youth) Club, Chesterfield
The RAY club is a Community group providing support and activities to the children and young people of Chesterfield. Their Director of Operations, Danny Henman, contacted Digital Support Derbyshire following the start of the PCrefurb pilot Project to ask if their organisation could be referred for some devices as they had no equipment at that time.
DSD met with Danny. Following this, he made a referral to the PCrefurb project. PCrefurb then sprang into action and provided the following, which Danny picked up from Glossop:
- 5 x SFF desktops and monitors, new keyboards and mice
- 2 x AIOs
- 5 tablets
- 2 Wi-Fi hotspots
- 10 SIMs
- 2 x laptops
- 7 x headsets
- a 4G Wi-Fi router
- a stack of SIMs as they don’t have broadband at their venue yet
Danny Henman is delighted with this: “This equipment provided by PCrefurb has made a massive improvement on our day to day running of the Charity. It has given us the opportunity to enable our users to get connected online. So many people who come to our hub, don’t have access to this equipment at home and have become socially isolated as technology has evolved and increased in price! This donation will enable people in this position to use our hub to access this equipment and improve digital social isolation. THANK YOU so so much. We are extremely grateful.”
Chesterfield FC Community Trust
We (Chesterfield FC Community Trust) applied for a grant from Rural Action Derbyshire to commence some digital support within our Senior Spireites sessions allowing the aging population to engage digitally and helping to combat social isolation.
As a charity we often struggle to purchase laptops due to the cost and ever need to update but we were aware that as part of this project we would need an up-to-date working laptop for the staff running the project to use. We applied to PCrefurb and within a week we had received a laptop for use on our Senior Spireites project.
This allows all participants in the group access to a laptop during the sessions which run three times a week. They are also able to come in and use it outside the sessions if needed and we know we will always have a laptop on site for them to use. Without this we would rely on staff having capacity to give up their laptop multiple times a week which would prevent them from doing other work for the Trust. This project would definitely not be working as successfully without the generosity of PCrefurb.
Zink ‘Discover Digital’, Buxton
CA is in her early 60s. She has worked in care and as a cleaner in the past but been unemployed due to health reasons for a number of years. Having recovered and learned to manage her health better she wanted to start looking for a part time job. Lack of IT skills
and equipment prevented this. The last time she applied for work it was via a hand written letter and CV.
CA attended Zink’s IT workshop ‘Discover Digital’ to gain some IT knowledge and had help from one of Zink’s work coaches. With her work coach helping, CA applied for a laptop from PCRefurb. When it arrived, she started to bring it to Discover Digital and learned how to use it better. As a result of improved IT skills and job searching and application knowledge gained from her work coach, she started to apply for jobs at home as well as with Zink’s work coach support.
She attended Zink one Thursday in July excited that she had been offered a job in a local school. She used her laptop to accept the offer and to undertake pre-employment checks like ID and DBS.
Without the laptop supplied by PCRefurb, she would not have been able to apply for the job at all nor would she have been able to accept it or undertake the required pre-employment checks in the manner preferred by the employer.
